As Soludo’s Campaign got a boost with the return of Ibezi

By Ejike Anyaduba

The homecoming and mega rally of September 20, 2025, held at the Christ the King Catholic Church field, Abatete, Idemili North LGA, Anambra State, was not just any other rally in the campaign effort of Governor Charles Soludo. It was one that shifted the dial. The homecoming of former House of Representatives member, Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Ibezi (Ochiagha Idemili) to the All Progressives grand Alliance (APGA) was all that was needed to give impetus to Soludo’s re-election effort and dim any hope of the opposition winning the biggest constituency in the state, come November 8.

Awujale’s burial and Aso Rock’s graveyard politics

Festus Adedayo

“Why should I bother myself with what is done to my body when I die? Oyomesi (the council of seven high-ranking chiefs in the Oyo Empire) knows what to do with my body!” That was what immediate past Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111, told me in his palace, a few weeks before he journeyed to Ibara - where Oyo buries its kings. He was furious with Ogun State traditional rulers. His grouse was with the Obas and Chiefs Law of 2021. That law has aberrant stipulations that are repugnant to tradition and customs. One of them is the provision stipulating that traditional rulers can be buried according to their religious dispositions.

President Bola Tinubu's Two Years of Resolute Reforms in a Tenuous Republic

By Sir Paul Chukwuma

A close confidant once remarked, during the crescendo of the 2023 general elections, that it would take a “mad man” to aspire to lead Nigeria at such a perilous juncture. His words were less hyperbole and more diagnosis: Nigeria, at that time, represented the archetype of a “wicked problem”; a multidimensional crisis with no easy resolution and several painful trade-offs. To him, the presidency was a poisoned chalice; any occupant was fated for disillusionment and the slow erosion of political capital.

Why Present And Past Governors Of Anambra State Should Get Along

By UCHE Nworah PhD

This past week, the former Governor of Old Anambra state, Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, clocked 85 years. I was in secondary school at the College of Immaculate Conception (CIC) Enugu when Jim was governor. This was before the creation of states. Anambra state then included today’s Ebonyi state, Enugu state, and the new Anambra state. This means that Jim, as he is fondly called, had a larger territory to govern.

Aso Rock’s voodoo statistics and my friend, Al Venter

Festus Adedayo

A couple of months ago, history walked on its two legs into my feeble embrace. When it did, I never knew it was Providence’s own way of anticipating Nigerian Aso Rock’s nauseating historical revisionism. History’s embrace had come by the way of a terse mail I received from foremost online medium, Premium Times. The newspaper had been sent an enquiry from a South African British author on February 7, 2025, “wanting to make contact with one of your Op-Ed writers, Festus Adedayo.” The enquirer described himself as “an old Africa hand (who) lived and worked in Nigeria…(who) also wrote (a book) on the Nigerian civil war”. I immediately proceeded to make contact with the British author. One thing led to the other and the enquirer and I were glued together by Thoth, the Egyptian mythological god of writing. He then couriered to me a copy of his recent book with the title, Takka Takka Bom Bom: A South African Correspondent’s Story (2022).

Nigerian leaders as CBEX Ponzi chancers

Festus Adedayo

On Page 28 of his very provocative book, The Present Darkness: A history of Nigerian organized crime, (2016) Stephen Ellis, British historian and Africanist, compared Nigerian politics to con artistry. Their practices, he said, were not different from acts of fabulists and fraudsters. Ellis’ take on Nigerian leaders synchronizes with a Henry Louis Gate’s The New Yorker piece of September 25, 1995. With the title, “Powell and the Black Elite,” the piece quoted ex-American Secretary of State, Colin Powell, as saying, “Nigerians as a group, frankly, are marvellous scammers… I mean, it is in their natural culture.”

Tinubu is the law!

Festus Adedayo

"Everything is my business. Everything. Anything I say is law...literally law." Barbara Geddes, et al in their How dictatorship works (2018) quoted Malawian dictator, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, as having once said the above.

In Nigeria of a little more than a week ago, they all came in quick successions: A National Assembly where libido ran riot; a son who said his father was Nigeria’s best president; a corps member who condemned that same father as terrible and that president, when he wakes up and looks at the mirror, like Banda, sees himself as “the law”. In the hands of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria appears to have become one complex, complicated web of mess and intrigues. When a people suffer such plague of multiple, endless afflictions, my people deploy a phrasal description to denote it. So, they compare such situation to an “egbinrin òtè”. Egbinrin òtè is a situation that defies solution. It scorns the biblical exhortation that affliction would not rise a second time. Under Tinubu’s egbinrin òtè Nigeria, afflictions come in multiple folds. Literally, egbinrin òtè is leaves of conspiracy. In usage, however, it is a scary, endless tale of repetitive sorrow. The affliction is sustained by a coldblooded-ness or bloodlessness. When you cut a leaf out of the branch of this tree, another sprouts immediately. In manifestation, you can compare an egbinrin òtè situation to the biblical cursed fig tree, doomed to bring out a sap of sorrow.

OPEN LETTER TO GOVERNOR SOLUDO

 OPEN LETTER TO GOVERNOR SOLUDO

Ubaka Okwusogu

Dear Governor,

I write to convey my worries which are not totally different from the concerns of the silent majority who are shy of communicating same to you. You may never get to know your public rating because of your brand of politics that forbids feedback and encourages echo chamber. You have since assumption of office fought every real and imaginary enemy and seem determined to carry on with the offensive as long as you remain the governor of Anambra state. It does appear there is no restraining you.
